GSE Challenge Innovative building & design Sep 19, 2008
The GSE innovative building & design Challenge is an architectural and engineering competition sponsored by the GSE Group within the scope of its Research & Development activity on design and construction of industrial/commercial buildings.
This competition is aimed at architecture students in their Master’s year and at engineering students in their final two years of college.
A virtual project on a real site
This is the first year for the competition, which is restricted to French schools for the first edition. The purpose of the 2008-2009 competition is to develop a logistics site on a strategic location on a ring road in the north of Paris, connected to the railroad and river traffic.
The building has to perform storage and express delivery operations (product exchange and breakdown areas).
One of the target objectives is to get away from the negative image of the warehouse by showing that large buildings can architecturally contribute to a high quality urban composition.
Building design must take into account the environmental impacts from the materials selected (low manufacturing energy/ cost, recyclable…), and limit operational energy impacts (heating, air-conditioning, artificial light…).
