Two innovations to light industrial buildings

Warehouse Ecolight – Office Ecolight: light where you need it, when you need it.

Warehouse Ecolight

Working in close partnership with a French light maker, GSE has developed a new lighting system it has christened “Ecolight Entrepôts”, or Warehouse Ecolight, specially adapted to lighting logistics platforms.

In such a warehouse, only half the floor area is accessible. The remaining floor area, filled with storage, does not require lighting. The Ecolight rectangular beam system lights only the rack aisles, and the tops of the pallets remain in the shadow. The lit area is thus limited to what is strictly necessary, and the annual electrical consumption can be decreased by some 35 % as compared to traditional warehouse lighting.

The Ecolight housing and its reflector were designed with high quality materials which improve both yield and durability. The lighting instrument itself is equipped with protective glass which provides with outstanding protection, enabling its use in all types of buildings, in particular Factory Mutual insured buildings.

The lighting instrument is closed, equipped with a Teflon-free metallic iodide bulb which alone accounts for 50% savings in maintenance as compared to a Teflon bulb – which is obligatory when the light itself is not a closed instrument.

GSE is currently building a 36,000-m² platform for ProLogis to be used for the Rossignol brand. This warehouse, which traditionally would have required 490 standard lights consuming 400 watts each, will be proudly using 320 Warehouse Ecolight lighting instruments.

Office Ecolight

GSE has also adopted an intelligent system for lighting office areas – each room is equipped with a movement detector which automatically sets off the electric lighting. When you enter your office, if the natural daylight is not sufficient, the electrical lighting goes on automatically. When you leave the office – to attend a meeting for example, it goes off automatically after a few minutes.

And Office Ecolight does even better!

Each lighting instrument is equipped with a sensor for ambient light which adapts the power of the lighting instrument to the natural light that is available. Thus, if you are working in your office towards the end of the day, the electric lighting will go on and will adapt the lighting power to the gradual decrease in the natural daylight. The lights which are farthest from the windows will give out more power than those located nearer the façades.

This technology provides outstanding comfort, even at very high levels of energy savings. The lighting energy consumed is strictly based on the lighting needs.

Another important point is that lighting energy also contributes heat to offices – and thus by saving on lights you also save on air-conditioning. In the southern regions of Europe, where air-conditioning is used more than heating, this can be very significant.
